Lined up for 'cue: A barbecue lunch at the Nebraska Medical Center sold out in 15 minutes and raised $211 for the American Red Cross' disaster relief fund for tornado victims. The event was Wednesday at the Nebraska Cafe at the medical center.
Anniversary gift: IBM marked the 100-year anniversary of its founding by having thousands of IBMers volunteer in their communities. In Omaha, about 40 local employees assisted at the Open Door Mission. During the previous weeks, they collected new and gently used shoes and socks to donate to the mission. At the mission, the volunteers helped with projects including organizing toiletries, clothing and canned food items; making sack lunches and food pantry boxes; and helping with general housekeeping and administrative work.
Helping the troops: Operation Care and Comfort and Old Navy stores again are partnering to get donations of supplies for troops. The third annual Operation Troop Donation will run Friday through July 4 at all Old Navy stores. Needed items include sunscreen, lip balm and personal hygiene items. The items will be sent to Operation Care and Comfort's headquarters in San Jose, Calif., to be sorted, boxed and shipped. Some items also go to VA hospitals in the United States. There are three Old Navy stores in the metro area, one in Lincoln, one in Kearney, Neb., and one in Sioux City, Iowa.

Items needed: Earl Adams, also known as the Sandman because he offers free sand painting in a bottle for children who sign a drug-free pledge, is seeking supplies. He needs clear, clean glass bottles — not jars — that have a neck and can be sealed with a cork or the lid that came with the bottle. Bottles that come filled with hot pepper sauce, perfume, Worcestershire sauce or other condiments work well. He also needs colored sand. These items or cash donations can be mailed to him at P.O. Box 133, Stuart, NE 68780.
Volunteers, please: Gateway of Chaos, a haunted house in Malvern, Iowa, is seeking more people for its management team. “Light construction, volunteer coordination, event marketing, costume and set design, theater/acting, makeup and more are all departments we're expanding,” said Spencer Terry, director. The new managers will work with the Malvern Area Betterment Association, which sponsors the fundraising haunted house. To learn more, visit www.gatewayofchaos.com.
A ringer: Nearly $3,000 was raised to fight breast cancer during a horseshoe tournament and raffle this month at Holy Name Catholic Church in Omaha. The $2,375 raised will be donated to the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure event July 28-30 in Cleveland. Event participants walk 60 miles in three days to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.
