Rosenblatt memories to be recorded

The Douglas County Historical Society will be at Rosenblatt Stadium to record memories of fans attending Omaha Royals games on Thursday, which is the Royals final game at the stadium.

During the College World Series in June, the Historical Society and the NCAA teamed to record remarks of fans in their “Memories Tent” on the final season at Rosenblatt Stadium. The society's oral interview series began July 3, the night of The World-Herald fireworks show.

Selected interviews have been placed on the Historical Society's Web Site, omahahistory.org.

Dedication Sept. 26 for Angel of Hope

The Greater Omaha Chapter of Compassionate Friends will dedicate the new Angel of Hope Children's Memorial on Sept. 26 at 2 p.m.

The memorial, near the Garden of the Bible at Boys Town, is a quiet place for families who have lost a child. It features a bronze angel with “hope” on its wing.

The Angel of Hope statue was introduced in the book and television movie, “The Christmas Box,” written by Richard Paul Evans, about a woman who mourns the loss of her child at the base of an angel monument.

Anyone who has been touched by the death of a child is welcome to attend the free event. People are invited to bring a white flower to place at the base of the statue in memory of a child.

Papillion giving away smoke detectors

The Papillion Fire Department is hoping to get 130 recently donated smoke detectors into some of the city's older homes.

Fire Chief Bill Bowes said the department is encouraging the elderly and families with young children who live in houses older than 20 years — homes that generally don't have the hard-wired detectors — to set up an appointment for the department to install the detectors. For an appointment, call 339-8617.
