Longtime U.P. operations chief will retire

Union Pacific’s head of operations, Dennis Duffy, plans to retire this fall after serving 12 years in the post, the longest in the company’s history.

Duffy, 59, is one of three University of Nebraska at Omaha graduates holding three of the top spots in the nation’s largest railroad. He began his career at Union Pacific in 1973 and held positions in finance, marketing and sales, and operations.

The other top executives who graduated from UNO are CEO Jim Young and chief of marketing and sales Jack Koraleski, both natives of Omaha.

Young said Duffy has a keen sense of what customers need and a tireless work ethic.

“We are grateful for his service,” Young said.

Lance M. Fritz, vice president of operations, has been appointed executive vice president of operations effective Sept. 1. He will be responsible for all aspects of Union Pacific’s railroad operations.

Fritz, 47, joined Union Pacific in 2000 after holding posts in two other companies. He is a graduate of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.

Duffy said 12 years was long enough for one person in the top operations job, the company is doing well and he wants to travel and spend time with his family.

“It’s one of those bittersweet deals — great company, but it’s the right time,” Duffy said.

Duffy, a native of Sioux City, Iowa, said he plans to remain in Omaha. Among other things, he will concentrate on his family’s foundation, which is devoted to education and helping underprivileged children.
