Look to the Oscars for spring fashion

Editor's note: World-Herald designer Ananda Spadt wrote today's Mom Daily. Check out her fashion column every Friday under mama help.

Did you watch the Oscars on Sunday? The red carpet at least?

Good! Then you got a sneak peak at a few spring trends you can start incorporating into your wardrobe.

Bright Lips

Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz sported bold, bright lipstick. The brighter, the better for lips this spring. Break out that bright red impulse-buy lipstick that you never wear and put a little on! Pair it with a neutral outfit like a little black dress or a white button-up shirt and you are good to go. This is a cheap and easy way to make any subdued outfit look fresh. Plus, it's just fun!

Architectural Details

Think of it as clothes with interesting details and shapes. Kate Winslet and Vera Farmiga both chose dresses with architectural interest. When you are buying new pieces for spring, pay attention to the details. Wear a skinny belt over your cardigan. Choose a structured jacket with interesting embellishments, like funky pockets. Get a shirt with a ruffled neckline. Architectural details come to life when you wear them, so make sure your try everything on before you buy.

Asymmetrical Tops

You can't go wrong with an asymmetrical top this year. Tina Fey and Queen Latifa wore beautiful asymmetrical gowns to the Oscars. You'll find almost every store is carrying asymmetrical tops and dresses right now, so snap one or two up! Don't feel limited to the one-strap look. There are tons of options with one large, embellished strap and one smaller strap. Choose something you feel comfortable in because confidence in what you are wearing is 90 percent of looking great. For work, pair an asymmetrical top with a pencil skirt. For going out, throw on some jeans with the cuffs rolled above the ankles and your favorite cute shoes.

Taking a risk

I'm not saying you should wear Cinnabons on your chest, like Charlize Theron, or attach a comforter to your hip, like J-Lo, but when it comes to your clothes, it's good to get out of your comfort zone! Look at the women around you and find a detail that you like on someone else. For example, maybe a chunky necklace that is MUCH bigger than anything you own will catch your eye. Try it out! Wear a huge necklace for one day ... just one day! If it is a fashion triumph, you will get a ton of compliments. If you feel ridiculous, then it was just one day! No one will ever remember and at least you know you tried something new.

The snow is finally melting, so you have no excuse not to get out there and try some of these looks. Let me know how it goes!
