A chiropractor for the baby? Oh yeah.

Editor's note: Omaha mom Jessica Hudson wrote today's Mom Daily.

I recently found myself at the chiropractor since lifting and bending are just a regular part of my job as a daycare provider and mom of two. During my consultation, my doctor asked if I was having any trouble sleeping and I replied, "Well yeah! But not because of my back, just my 1-year old!" I explained that he had been teething and dealing with a double ear infection in the past month and had gone from being happy most of the time to fussy and having sleep problems.

The doctor offered to look at my son for free and see if he could do anything to help. Sure, why not, I thought? It would be free and I like FREE! (But honestly, I was thinking to myself, "Sure, Dr. Crazy, crack some of my son's bones, and I am sure all my problems will go away.")

But it worked!

My son's mood and sleep habits changed right away. He was back to his happy self, and I was a happier mom for it. On top of it all, his motor skills skyrocketed! He went from mostly arm crawling and pulling himself up to his knees to crawling on all fours, pulling himself up, cruising and climbing stairs in just a week!

Maybe it was coincidence. Maybe it was all in my head. But I am a believer and plan on regularly taking my kids now.

Apparently, chiropractors can help with things like bed-wetting, too. Wow. Really?

Do any of you take your kids to a chiropractor?

Jessica Hudson is married with two boys. She is an in-home daycare provider in southwest Omaha.

Absolutely! I didn't know much about the chiropractor with my first 2 children, but my 2 month old has been going since she was 3 weeks old. He was able to resolve her issues with reflux and choking while nursing. She is also a great sleeper, much better than my other two at this age! I am a believer for life :)

I took my son to see my chiropractor shortly after he was born and a few times since then. The chiropractor offered to come up to the hospital to adjust my son.

I took my baby to the chiropractor from 1-3M of age to help with reflux and colic. Dr. Becker was not only super gentle and used a ProAdjuster tool on her spine.

I have heard of this as a remedy for colic, but was always so scared to try it. So glad it worked!! I wonder what it is that makes them calmer?

Umm, no. Because they are not real doctors. How's that kool-aid taste?

i love my chiro for me and my two sons (from 3 weeks old), we go regularly! he's helped with ear infections, sinus issues, bladder issues.......my son has spina bifida and we've seen improvements in his bladder function that the urologist is even suprised at. He is crawling and standing and almost ready to walk at 12 months old.

This will sound hippy and granola, but i think the body has the ability to heal itself of most ailments. Chiropractic just sets your body up for success and gives it the best possible chance of doing just that. love love love my chiropractor!

I've taken my girls monthly since they were very little. My youngest started at 1-week old. I firmly believe their great health and development are a direct result of their chiropractic care.

When my first child was an infant plagued with ear infections, I talked to his pediatrician (actually, a partner of his in the office) about pursuing craniosacral therapy with an osteopath. He wasn't enthusiastic about the idea, but said it would probably be OK, as long as I didn't go to a chiropractor. He said under no circumstances should be baby be adjusted. I tell this because I find it interesting the divisions formed between the two practices of medicine, conventional and chiropractic.
(I didn't end up going to the osteopath at the time because I thought the cost was prohibitive, but after paying for ear tubes a couple years later, I wish I had.)

@Quack, you have multiple messages here showing proof as to the benefits of going to a chiropractor. I go regularly as well and it has helped with head, neck and back issues and has helped me sleep better and have fewer headaches. My brother's chiropractor is the one that actually found irregular bone structure in his neck for which the chiropractor recommended he see a surgeon. He could've been paralyzed had he not found this out. Don't knock it until you've tried it!

Thanks guys for all the comments! It is so cool that so many of you take your kids to the chiropractor and have found it to be a positive experience like me.

Melissa- Take her! :) My chiropractor told me not only does it boost the immune system, it can help with things ilke colds, ear infections, and colic.

Quack- Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I, too, was very skeptical but have been very happy with the results. I would also argue that my chiropractor IS a doctor after several years in medical school and therapy that dates back over a hundred years.

Very good article. I am surprised to see how many moms take their kids to the chiropractor. I think I may need to start taking my son.... Do they cure terrible twos? LOL! I bet not, but what wrong with wanting my child to be the healthiest he can be! Thanks for writing the article!

I am a believer! I have seen it heal too many people to disregard it's benefits. I took my youngest son when he was battling respiratory issues.

Great article and fascinating topic! In my opinion, anything that heals the body without drugs or intervention can't be a bad thing.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with chiropractic. As a Chiropractor myself, my children are adjusted on a regular basis of which I know has made a difference in their development and health. Chiropractic is for much more than aches and pains. The adjustment relieves interferences in the nervous system which is the vital force to the entire body. Treating the youngest individual, because everyone has a nervous system, can allow them to perform to the best of their ability throughout life! I have seen many children change and heal before my eyes and it amazes me every day and I am thankful to provide so much for so many families!
