Why are we doing it?
Heels + socks = hotness. It's a trend that popped up last spring on runway shows like Anna Sui and Burberry Prorsum. Magazine spreads have since shown leggy models in colorful printed socks with dazzling high heels. Now women on the street are trying to re-create the look.
“Socks are a great accessory rather than a big necklace,” said Omahan Katherine Neary, 33. “It's so functional and you wear just about any outfit with them.”
Who is doing it?
Young women, mostly 20- and 30-somethings. Celebrities Joss Stone and Sarah Jessica Parker sported the trendy sock look at red-carpeted events.
Neary has more than 60 pairs of socks — some with skeletons and some brightly colored — she styles with a pair of heeled Mary Janes.
“It's the only way you can wear heels in the winter,” she said. “You can't do anything too bulky because it won't fit your summer heel.”
How do you do it?
You can go with long or short socks, nude or brightly colored. Choose patterns that are funky but mature. Play with patterns and colors.
“I like the over-the-knee socks. It's real school-girl, nerdy type,” Neary said. “I wear a lot of short skirts so it completes the look.”
If you choose an ankle sock, make sure it hits near the ankle to help give your legs a long, slim look.
Where can you find them?
Just about any retail store, from Walmart to Target. Sockdreams.com has some really ridiculous socks that are cute, Neary said. She's placed more than 200 orders with the online store. She recently picked up a pair of Betsey Johnson designer socks.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the style, but expect to spend between $4 to $25 for a good pair.
“I've spent up to $25 on a pair,” Neary said. “It's got to be a really special pair, though.”
