Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (PG) Reviews are calling it an inferior Harry Potter wannabe, but director Chris Columbus' movie about a teen who is half Greek god, battling to retrieve a thunderbolt stolen from Zeus, looks fun for young teens and tweeners.
Dear John (PG-13) This weepy romance based on a Nicholas Sparks novel features hot young stars (Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried) in love. He's a soldier kept away from her by 9/11. Nice message about compassion for those with autism, but also a steamy premarital sex scene and some boozy parties.
From Paris With Love (R) and The Wolfman (R) Both violent, bloody affairs not suitable for younger teens.

I saw Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief this weekend with my 17 year old son. He had read all the books while he was groing up. It is not a dark as Harry Potter but it was a fun movie to watch. I will add it to my DVD collection. It was worth $7.25 ticket price but the $4.50 large soda was not.

My 10y and I saw the movie. His 4th grade teacher read the book to his class so he was very excited and wanted to see it right away. He was disappointed that it was not like the book and made sure he pointed it out to me in every scene. I said most movies that are created from books are like that. It was worth going because it is very difficult to find an appropriate and good movie for this age group. Especially one that both mom and son can enjoy.

I have an uncontrollable urge to "get even" with Chris Columbus for straying so far from the original book. If he was going to change the story so dramatically why not change all the names as well. Unfortunately it means that the movies that should have been made will not be.
