Smashburger

SMASHBURGER, 12330 K Plaza (in the L Street Marketplace). The Denver-based chain's first Omaha location serves up tasty, lacy-edged burgers -- and something you might not expect: terrific vegetables. The flash-fried asparagus, green beans and carrots are dynamite, as are the rosemary-garlic-olive oil fries. If 120th and L Streets seems too far west for you, a second Smashburger (with the same hours) opened this week at 7204 Jones St. (just north of the Nebraska Furniture Mart). Hours: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Information: 933-7300. Prices: $.

Mom scoop: Though there are gourmet flourishes, the casual Smashburger's attuned to kids, with four kids' meals (burger, hotdog, chicken strips and grilled cheese with fries and drink) under $4. We spotted lots of families while we dined. It can be a little cramped when busy. But if you can bear the line to order and get a table, the food wait's not long and they bring it out to you. Once you're seated, you shouldn't have to get up.
