Nebraska absorbed its first round of transfer attrition Monday when edge rusher Chief Borders entered the portal.
Borders, who played his third college season at Nebraska after two years at Florida, has two years of eligibility remaining. He appeared in all 12 games with the Huskers last fall while recording a career-high nine tackles along with a pass breakup.
The window for players entering the portal closes Tuesday, though names of entrants may matriculate out publicly later into the week. Nebraska didn’t have anyone announce their departure prior to the end of spring practices Saturday.
Coach Matt Rhule said after the spring game that he would hold a team meeting Monday. Players would then meet with their position coaches before having conversations with him through the week.
“We meet with every single player, go through where they stand right now,” Rhule said. “We can’t make promises for the future. I think the biggest thing that I’d say is, wanting them to always understand — everyone is going to have your back, everyone is going to tell you what you want to hear when things are going well. ... We talk to every single guy regardless, but a guy who’s trying to make a decision on the portal, they can come talk to us.”
Coaches had positive feedback through the spring on Borders, a 6-foot-4, 245-pounder from Chicago. A hybrid defensive lineman/linebacker that NU labels a “jack,” Borders appeared to be in the rotational mix along with the likes of Jimari Butler, Princewill Umanmielen, James Williams and others.
Borders was credited with half a tackle for the White team Saturday.
